Workshop

2012

In collaboration with

Paula-Marie Kanefendt

Initially, you had been looking for this one information and after hours of following various paths and approaches, you are neither able to remember the orginal question nor to reconstruct the paths that you have been taking through the vast supply of information. This seems more and more to become an everyday experience. Not only in the internet we are exposed to enormous amounts of information – but: are we really able to access and accumulate more knowledge than we did in the past? Or do we live in a state of constant random noise and blind spots?

The workshop Related Links – From knowledge- to information-based society was concerned with questions revolving around the reflection of how we nowadays process information. We would be searching for strategies of selecting information and forms of information acquisition. During the workshop we tried to translate these ideas into workable forms and media – from posters to interventions into public space. The final results were shown in an exhibition within the framework of the universities open house walkabout.

The working process consisted of two parts. As a starting point students were asked to theoretically approach possible definitions of the term information through research and teamwork. Based on that process us and the students further approached the topic and developed interesting questions and interrogations into the theme. The main part of the workshop then focused on practical experiments of information transfer and appropriation, based on the developed questions and interrogations, in either individual or teamwork. We disussed and looked for strategies of selecting and forms of transferring information. The most workable and appropriate solutions were carved out as the work progressed. The resulting exhibition besides from book-objects, free collages, stickers and works directly on the wall also consisted of an audio piece. Main goal of the workshop was to provide the participants with strategies for the process of idea-development and highlight ways to substantiate and implement their ideas. We tried to strengthen cognitive capabilities and provide guidance for conscious, consequent approaches, that allow the translation of theoretical content into visual strategies.

The workshop adressed students from all fields taught at the university. By including students from various programs such as fine art, communication- and industrial design as well as art- and media science a calculated and explicitly wished for intertwining of different disciplines was triggered. It took place from February 13th until February 16th 2012 at Braunschweig University of Art.
